Golden Eagle’s Habitat

Golden eagles construct their spacious nests in cliffs and other high places, which they may revisit over numerous breeding seasons. The bulk of breeding endeavors occur during springtime. They display monogamous behavior, often staying united for numerous years, potentially even for a lifetime.

Up to four eggs are laid by females, which are then incubated for six weeks. In about three months, one or two young typically survive to fledge. When the parents think their young ones are ready to fly what they do is simply push them over the cliff. While the weak ones die, strong ones fly back to their nest. They do this 3-4 times a day to teach their offspring to fly.

Typically, these youthful golden eagles achieve complete autonomy in the autumn season, after which they wander until they start establishing a territory for themselves in four to five years.

Diverse Prey and Hunting Prowess

Golden eagles are apex predators known for their exceptional hunting skills. Their diet encompasses a wide array of animals, including small mammals, birds, and even larger prey like hares and foxes. With keen eyesight and astonishing speed, they soar through the skies, spotting their quarry from incredible distances and descending with astonishing precision to secure their meal.

Golden eagles are typically active hunters during daylight hours; however, there have been records of them engaging in hunting activities starting from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, particularly during the breeding season. When fully grown, a golden eagle’s dietary needs range from approximately 230 to 250 g (8.1 to 8.8 oz) of food per day.

Yet, the lives of most eagles are punctuated by cycles of plenty and scarcity. These majestic birds have demonstrated the ability to endure periods of up to a week without sustenance, followed by consuming as much as 900 g (2.0 lb) of food in a single sitting. This pattern underscores their remarkable adaptability to fluctuating food availability in their habitats.

Cultural Significance and Eagle Hunters

In Mongolian culture, the relationship between humans and golden eagles goes beyond admiration; it extends to partnership. The art of eagle hunting, or “berkutchi”, is a traditional practice that has been passed down through generations. Skilled eagle hunters, known as “burkitshi,” form deep bonds with their avian companions, working together in perfect harmony to catch game and showcase the incredible synergy between man and eagle.
