FAQ

How difficult is the 5-day Altai Tavan Bogd tour with Malchin Peak climb?

Moderate to challenging. The 5-day tour includes one summit attempt on Malchin Peak (4,050m) plus horse trekking to Potanin Glacier base camp. The summit day involves 8-10 hours of walking and moderate altitude climbing with crampons and ice axe (provided). Other days involve 3-5 hours of hiking or horse riding. No prior mountaineering experience required, but you need solid cardiovascular fitness. Approximately 75-85% of our 5-day trekkers successfully summit Malchin Peak. This is the SHORTEST Altai Tavan Bogd tour that includes a peak climb.

Do I need prior mountaineering experience for the 5-day tour?

No prior mountaineering experience required. We provide a short training session at base camp covering crampon use, ice-axe technique, and rope-team movement — enough for the non-technical Malchin Peak ascent. What you DO need is solid cardiovascular fitness (able to walk 6-8 hours at altitude) and comfort with basic horse riding for the approach. If you have completed any multi-day trek above 2,500m, you are ready. Absolute beginners with zero outdoor experience should consider our 6-day Best Of tour (no peak climb) first.

What’s included in the 5-day tour price?

Price includes: domestic flights (Ulaanbaatar-Ölgii roundtrip), 4×4 transport, English-speaking local Kazakh mountain guide, expedition cook, pack-horse support for camping gear, all meals, 4 nights accommodation (hotel in Ölgii + ger camp + tented base camp), park entry permits, border zone permit (required for Altai Tavan Bogd), and all technical peak gear (crampons, ice axe, harness, rope, helmet). NOT included: international flights, travel insurance, personal clothing/boots, tips ($10-$15 per day per traveler), and alcohol.

When is the best time to do the 5-day tour?

The 5-day Altai Tavan Bogd tour runs June 10 to September 10 annually. July is the warmest and most stable for weather and has the best Malchin summit conditions. Mid-August offers the lowest river-crossing water levels and clearest skies. June 10-25 has more snow on the upper mountain (longer summit day, more dramatic) but the most flowers and wildlife. Early September (before Sept 10) has crisp cool days and fewer travelers but nights drop to −5°C. Private departures available any time in the season. Book 4-6 months in advance.

How much does the 5-day Altai Tavan Bogd tour cost?

The 5-day Altai Tavan Bogd + Malchin Peak tour starts from $1,300 per person for scheduled group departures and private groups of 3+ travelers. Private bookings: $1,800 for 2 travelers, $2,300 solo. Deposit: $600 per person, balance due 60 days before departure. Price includes domestic flights, guide, cook, meals, accommodation, park permits, and all technical peak gear. International flights to Mongolia ($800-$2,200), insurance, personal clothing, and tips are extra. Total trip budget from USA/Europe: $2,500-$4,000 per person.

What gear do I need to bring for the 5-day tour?

Personal gear: broken-in B1/B2 mountaineering boots, a 30-litre daypack, a 4-season sleeping bag rated to −10°C, insulated down jacket, waterproof shell jacket + pants, thermal base layers, trekking poles, gloves, hat, sunglasses, SPF50 sunscreen, headlamp, and a 1-litre water bottle. We provide all technical peak gear: crampons, ice axe, harness, rope, helmet. We also provide tents, sleeping mats, and mess tent. A full packing list with brand recommendations is emailed 45 days before departure.

How is the 5-day tour different from the 6-day and 8-day versions?

The 5-day tour is the shortest path to summit Malchin Peak. Compared to: 6-day ‘Best Of’ — different itinerary, scenic + cultural, NO peak climb, all-ages. 8-day ‘Comprehensive’ — includes Malchin Peak PLUS additional days for nomadic family stay, cultural performances, and petroglyph sites. If you want only the peak climb in minimum time, choose the 5-day. If you want peak + culture + comfort, choose 8-day. If you want scenery without a climb, choose 6-day.

How cold does it get on the 5-day Altai Tavan Bogd tour?

During the June-September climbing season, daytime temperatures at base camp (3,200m) range from 5°C to 15°C. Summit day (4,050m) temperatures are −5°C to 5°C during daylight, wind-chill down to −15°C on exposed ridges. Nights at base camp drop to −5°C even in July. In tented base camp with your 4-season sleeping bag you stay warm. On the summit bid, proper layers (thermal base, fleece, shell, down jacket) are essential. We start summit attempts at 3-4am to catch stable morning weather and daylight.
