OVERVIEW
Bayan-Olgii province has the most active Mongolian eagle hunters in the world. Nomadic Kazakh people in this region have kept their ancient Kazakh culture for thousands of years. The main reason they can keep the traditions alive is the “nomadic lifestyle”.
They migrate 4 times a year. Their way of living is truly amazing, but at the same time, it can be very difficult. From early morning, they take care of their animals, and it continues till late evening.
The Nomad’s children start to help the family from a young age and simultaneously learn nomadic traditions and skills. Eagle hunting is in their blood. The Kazakh eagle hunters learn eagle training from their father, and it is passed from one generation to another.
Nowadays, there are over 200 Mongolian eagle hunters in the Bayan-Olgii province. Our Discover Altai team offers you the unique experience of visiting a Kazakh eagle hunter’s family in this remote corner of the world.
You will have the opportunity to stay with a family and explore a lot of ancient traditions. Be a part of real golden eagle hunting. The Kazakh eagle hunters will show us how they train their eagles.
Enjoy the stunning Altai mountains and feel free to take pictures and film the scenery. Once-in-a-lifetime experience guaranteed!

FAQ
When is the best time to visit Mongolian eagle hunters?
The best time to visit Mongolian eagle hunters is between October and April, the traditional hunting season. Peak months are late November through February, when eagles actively hunt foxes and hares in the snow and Kazakh hunter families follow their winter routines. For first-time visitors, late November or mid-February offers the best balance of active hunting and manageable cold. From May to September, eagles are moulting and do not hunt, so you can still meet families but will not witness falconry in action. Summer visits are possible as cultural homestays without live hunting.
What is the difference between visiting eagle hunters and attending the Eagle Festival?
Visiting eagle hunters is an intimate, year-round homestay where you live with a Kazakh family and witness real golden eagle hunts in daily life. Attending the Eagle Festival is a 1-2 day spectator event where 60-150 hunters compete in traditional games before large tourist crowds. A homestay is authentic daily life with 1-4 travelers; a festival is a cultural showcase with 500-2,000 spectators. Many travelers combine both — attending the Sagsai or Golden Eagle Festival, then extending with a 5-7 day homestay for behind-the-scenes experience.
What does a typical day at an eagle hunter homestay look like?
A typical winter day with an eagle hunter family: (1) morning — hot milk tea and breakfast in the family ger, help prepare the eagle (feeding, checking jesses and hood); (2) mid-morning — hunter saddles horse, you ride along in a 4×4 to spot foxes and hares across the Altai steppe; (3) eagle release and chase — you watch from 20-50 meters as the eagle hunts; (4) afternoon — return to the ger, share lunch, photography time, help with livestock if you want; (5) evening — family dinner, stories translated by your English-speaking guide, traditional Kazakh music, early sleep in warm sheepskin blankets. No two days are identical.
How many eagle hunter families will I meet during the 8-day tour?
Our 8-day itinerary includes stays with 2-3 different Kazakh eagle hunter families across different villages in Bayan-Ölgii Province. This gives you a broader view of how each family approaches falconry, different eagle training styles, and varied winter-hunting techniques. You spend 2 nights at the first homestay, 2-3 nights at the second, and optionally 1 night at a third (depending on weather and hunter availability). Our local Kazakh guide knows these families personally from 8+ years of partnership — you are welcomed as a personal guest, not a tourist.
Do I need photography experience to enjoy this tour?
No photography background is needed. Many travelers come purely for the cultural experience and nomadic lifestyle. If you are a photographer, you will find endless opportunities: intimate family portraits, action shots of the eagle hunt, dramatic Altai winter landscapes, and candid moments in traditional ger life. The eagle hunt itself is fast — a 70-200mm telephoto lens with 1/1000s shutter speed is ideal — but iPhone photos work fine too. We allow as much photography time as you want; families are comfortable with cameras.
Is winter eagle hunting safe for tourists in Mongolia?
Yes, winter eagle hunting is safe when done with experienced local operators. Safety is managed through insulated ger accommodation with wood stoves, heated 4×4 transport, satellite communication, local guides with 10+ years of winter experience, and required travel insurance covering remote medical evacuation. Over 8 years of winter eagle hunter tours, we have had zero serious medical incidents. Eagles are always handled by hunters and never interact directly with tourists. The Ölgii regional hospital is 2-4 hours drive from most homestays if needed.
How cold does it get during Mongolian eagle hunter visits?
During the Mongolian winter eagle hunting season (November to March), temperatures in Bayan-Ölgii range from −10°C (14°F) on mild days to −35°C (−31°F) at night in January. January is the coldest month with daytime averages around −20°C (−4°F). The cold is dry with low humidity (30-50%) and 250+ sunny days per year, so it feels less severe than the numbers suggest. Inside the gers temperatures stay between 15-22°C with continuous wood stoves. Proper insulated boots, thermal layers, and down jackets are essential — we provide a full packing list 45 days before departure.
How much does the 8-day Mongolian Eagle Hunter tour cost?
Our 8-day Mongolian Eagle Hunter homestay tour starts from $1,400 per person for groups of 3 or more travelers. Private bookings: $2,300 for solo, $1,800 per person for 2 travelers. A $600 deposit per person secures your spot with the balance due 60 days before departure. Price includes domestic flights (Ulaanbaatar-Ölgii), 4×4 transport, English-speaking local Kazakh guide, all meals, 7 nights accommodation (hotels + homestays + ger camps), and cultural permits.
