FAQ

What does the 6-day Altai Tavan Bogd tour include?

Our 6-day ‘Best of Altai Tavan Bogd’ tour covers Potanin Glacier, Oigor Valley, Khoton and Khurgan Lakes, Waterfall Valley, and Altai petroglyph archaeological sites. It is a scenic and cultural tour for travelers who want the highlights of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park without a technical peak climb. Price includes domestic flights (Ulaanbaatar-Ölgii roundtrip), 4×4 transport, English-speaking local Kazakh guide, all meals, 5 nights accommodation (hotels + ger camps + homestay), park entry permits, and optional cultural extras (throat singer, shaman ceremony, traditional archery).

Is the 6-day tour suitable for families and older travelers?

Yes. The 6-day tour is our most accessible Altai Tavan Bogd option. Designed for all ages, it involves moderate walking (3-5 hours per day on uneven terrain), comfortable ger camp nights, and no technical climbing. Minimum age is 8 and we accept travelers up to 75+ with doctor clearance. Most travel is by 4×4 vehicle, with short hikes at scenic viewpoints. Children under 12 should be comfortable on horse rides. This is the right choice for multigenerational family travel or travelers preferring cultural immersion over physical challenge.

Do I need to climb anything on the 6-day tour?

No technical climbing is required. The 6-day tour is a scenic driving and walking tour — you do light hikes to Potanin Glacier viewpoints (no glacier travel), walk through Waterfall Valley (flat 2-3 hour walks), and explore petroglyph sites on short trails. If you want to summit a peak, choose our 5-day (Malchin Peak climb) or 8-day (comprehensive) versions. If you prefer culture + scenery with gentle walking, this 6-day tour is the right fit.

What’s the difference between the 6-day, 5-day, and 8-day Altai Tavan Bogd tours?

Three distinct products: (1) 6-day ‘Best Of’ — scenic + cultural, no peak climb, all-ages, $1,300. (2) 5-day ‘Peak Climb’ — shortest way to summit Malchin Peak (4,050m), moderate difficulty, ages 12-70, $1,300. (3) 8-day ‘Comprehensive’ — includes Malchin Peak climb PLUS cultural performances PLUS nomadic family stay, most complete, ages 15-70, $1,700. The 6-day focuses on scenery and is easiest; the 5-day is shortest and active; the 8-day covers everything.

Moderate fitness. You should be comfortable with 3-5 hours of walking on uneven terrain per day at altitudes between 2,000m and 3,000m, and several hours of 4×4 driving on rough roads. No technical skills, no peak climbing, no multi-day trekking. If you regularly walk 5-8 km at home without exhaustion and can handle some short uphill climbs, you are ready.
