OVERVIEW

Khuvsgul is the land of Last Nomadic Reindeer Tribe well known as Tsaatan people, or the Tuvan or Dukha ethnic group. Khuvsgul Lake is the biggest freshwater lake in Mongolia and 14th in the world. It holds almost 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water and 1% of all the fresh water in the world. It has a sister lake named Baikal Lake that is a bit bigger.

The Discover Altai team offers you one of the most famous and memorable adventures in the north of Mongolia. Explore the unique lifestyle of reindeer herders and their way of living. There are about 250 reindeer herders who have kept their ancient traditions based on Shamanist beliefs. Tour will be started and end in Ulaanbaatar. It is better to see once, than hear about it thousands of times. Come and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience in this remote corner of the world!

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar.

Welcome to Mongolia. Our Discover Altai team will meet you on your arrival at Chinggis Khaan airport or from any location in the city. We transfer you to your hotel. After having lunch we will take you on a short city tour which includes visiting the Museum of National History and Central Square. We will have a Welcome dinner at a restaurant.

DAY 2: Fly to Murun

In the morning, catch a flight to the Khuvsgul province in northern Mongolia. At the local airport, you will be met by our Discover Altai representative team consisting of a driver, cook and an English speaking tour guide. After lunch, we will drive in the direction of Tsagaan Nuur village. We will camp in the middle of wild nature.

DAY 3: Arrive at Tsagaan Nuur.

Arrive at Tsagaan nuur village. The small village is located in the north corner of the country is the gate to the Wild Taiga. Here we will meet our local reindeer herder contacts. These guys will support us over the next couple of days with their horses and reindeers.

DAY 4: Horse Trekking Day.

After having breakfast, we will pack our baggage and head to the Taiga. Our guide will give some horse riding instructions. Enjoy your horse trekking all the way to the reindeer herder’s family. Today you can enjoy the scenery and stunning nature of the Mongolian Taiga region. Arrive in reindeer herder’s summer place after the long ride on horseback. Meet the nomadic reindeer herders and their families.

DAY 5: Explore More about Reindeer Herders

It is a unique experience to wake up in the Taiga surrounded by nomadic reindeer herders. Feel free to take pictures of the Tsaatan people’s life. Their way of living is truly unique. Also, you have an opportunity to ride a reindeer. Explore more about these people’s cultures and how they take care of their animals. Have a memorable picture with the family.

DAY 6: Leisure day

Optionally today you can hike around and enjoy the wildness of this remote corner of the world! Or horse trek back to the Tsagaan nuur and camp on the halfway.

DAY 7: Horse trek to Tsagaan nuur

After having breakfast, say “goodbye” to the nomadic reindeer herders and go back to Tsagaan nuur village. Enjoy your horse trekking. Our contacts will support us until we reach the village. Upon arrival in the village you can swim in the lake.

DAY 8: Arrive in Ulaan-Uul.

In the morning we will head to Ulaan-Uul. It is the halfway between Tsagaan nuur and Murun. Relax and camp by the lake. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of northern Mongolia

DAY 9: Arrive in Murun.

The administration center of the Khuvsgul province. Upon arrival, we will transfer to a comfortable hotel room after a long adventure in wildlife. In the evening we will walk around the town center. Farewell dinner at the restaurant.

DAY 10: Fly back to Ulaanbaatar.

Catch a flight to Ulaanbaatar. At UB airport, our team will pick you up and transfer you to the hotel. In the afternoon we will take a tour to the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex. This is the world’s biggest horse statue. Enjoy the beautiful landscape outside of the city

TOUR DETAILS

Support team:

During the trip, you will be supported by local experienced guides. The team consists of a local English speaking tour guide, experienced driver with an off-road vehicle and expedition cook. Also, you have an opportunity to explore the nomadic reindeer tribe’s lifestyle. Our Discover Altai team has representatives all over Mongolia and local community positions. We take excellent care of our guests.

Accommodation:

We are equipped with sleeping bags and mattresses. During the tour, you will stay in tents. Also, two nights hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

What to bring:

Backpack, head light, warm clothes, hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and pants, towel, personal medicine, cream, power bank, solar charger.

Notice:

During the trip, we will be out of the phone signal and electricity. Please let your family know about it, just to be sure they won’t be worried. We will have a signal in the cities and the province center.

Weather:

Tour itinerary has based in the summertime. Usually, the weather is warm and comfortable. But we recommend you take waterproof jackets and some warmer clothes.

Shower: Unfortunately, during the tour, we have no opportunity to take a shower. But, as an alternative option, you can wash-up in the river or lake. Please make sure the possibility to swim in the lake from the tour guide.
