Four days in Bayan-Ölgii for Mongolia’s Golden Eagle Festival — two days of competition among the Kazakh eagle hunters of the Altai.

DAY1
Day 1DAY 1: Welcome to Bayan-Ölgii Province!
Your journey into the heart of the Altai begins! From Ulaanbaatar, you’ll take a 2-hour domestic flight to Ölgii, departing from the same terminal at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. We will arrange your domestic flight tickets and inform you of the exact date and time in advance.
Upon your arrival at Ölgii Airport, you will be greeted by your friendly local team—your driver, chef, and English-speaking guide—ready to begin your adventure. From here, we drive to the winter home of the eagle hunter. During this season, families live in their cozy wooden houses, offering a warm and authentic atmosphere.
Meet the eagle hunter and his family, enjoy traditional Kazakh milk tea, and experience their hospitality. Depending on your flight schedule, we can also go for an afternoon horseback ride. Ride up to a higher viewpoint where beautiful panoramic landscapes open up around you. Feel free to take plenty of photos with the eagle hunter and the majestic golden eagle.
Return to the family home and enjoy a delicious welcome dinner!

DAY2Day 2
DAY 2: Golden Eagle Festival
After breakfast, we head to Shar Nuur lakeside, the venue of the Golden Eagle Festival. The drive takes about one hour. As you may discover, Mongolia runs on “Mongolian time,” meaning things often start a little later than planned—usually 1–2 hours. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the relaxed rhythm!
Today you will witness the opening ceremony, the grand parade of eagle hunters in full traditional attire, and the first round of eagle-hunting competitions.
Discover Altai will set up our kitchen yurt, where you can enjoy hot tea, coffee, and a freshly prepared lunch during breaks.
Enjoy the golden eagle festival atmosphere throughout the day. In the late afternoon (around 4–5 PM), we return to the eagle hunter’s home.

DAY3Day 3
DAY 3: Golden Eagle Festival
On the second day of the festival, prepare for even more excitement! Today features a variety of traditional nomads’ horse games.
One of the most thrilling events is the Tug-of-War—a fierce contest where two horsemen battle for control of a goat skin. This ancient game required strength, skill, and a powerful bond with the horse, originally designed to train young nomads for battle. Watching it unfold is a true glimpse into Central Asian nomadic culture.
You will also see many other traditional games, each with its own story and meaning. The festival concludes with the awards ceremony, celebrating the best eagle hunters of the year.
Return to the eagle hunter’s family home and enjoy another warm, cozy evening in their hospitality.

Today’s schedule depends on your flight time.
Say goodbye to the eagle hunter’s family and take your flight back to Ulaanbaatar.
