FAQ

Who are the Tsaatan people of Northern Mongolia?

The Tsaatan (also called Dukha) are a Turkic-speaking reindeer-herding people of about 200 families living in the Taiga forests of Khuvsgul Province, near the Russian border. They are one of the last reindeer-herding cultures in the world, traditionally living in canvas teepees called örts and depending on their reindeer for milk, transport, and spiritual practice. Their culture is distinct from Mongolian and Kazakh herders — closer to Siberian indigenous peoples. The community is small and protective of cultural integrity, so visits require an arranged invitation through a trusted operator.

Where is Khuvsgul, and how do I get to the Tsaatan camps?

Khuvsgul Province is in northern Mongolia, bordering Russia (Tuva Republic). Lake Khuvsgul itself is Mongolia’s deep blue ‘Pearl of the North’. The Tsaatan camps are in the Taiga forest west and northwest of Lake Khuvsgul. Access: fly Ulaanbaatar to Murun (1.5 hours, included in tour), drive 4 hours by 4×4 to a remote village, then 6-8 hours by horseback or 4×4 + walking through Taiga forest to reach the Tsaatan camps. There are no roads to the camps themselves — only forest trails.

When can I visit the Tsaatan?

Best time is June through September (summer Taiga season). Outside summer the Tsaatan camps move with their reindeer to even more remote winter ranges (north of 51° latitude) and access becomes prohibitively difficult and dangerous for outsiders. Our 11-day tour runs June, July, and August departures. The community moves camp 4-10 times per year following reindeer grazing patterns — the exact location of camps is confirmed only weeks before departure.

Is it ethical to visit Tsaatan reindeer-herding communities?

Yes — when done with permission and proper compensation. The Tsaatan community is a tiny minority (about 200 families) with strong cultural integrity concerns. We coordinate every visit with the community council in advance, never visit without invitation, never photograph children without parent consent, and pay compensation directly to the host family AND to the community fund. We cap group size at 4-6 travelers per departure to prevent overwhelming the small camps. Ethical tourism keeps the culture viable economically — but only when done right.

How does the Tsaatan tour differ from Altai Tavan Bogd tours?

Different region, different culture, different ecosystem. Altai Tavan Bogd is in WESTERN Mongolia (Bayan-Ölgii Province) — Kazakh culture, eagle hunting, glacier mountains. Tsaatan is in NORTHERN Mongolia (Khuvsgul Province) — Turkic Tsaatan culture, reindeer herding, Taiga forest near Russia. The two cannot be combined in one short trip due to the 1,500 km distance. Choose Altai for mountain landscapes + eagle culture; choose Tsaatan for Taiga forest + reindeer culture; do both as separate Mongolia trips for the full picture.

What should I bring for a Tsaatan visit?

Sturdy waterproof hiking boots (Taiga is wet and muddy), waterproof shell + thermal layers (summer Taiga drops to 5°C at night), insect repellent (mosquitoes are intense July-August), a small backpack, sleeping bag rated to 0°C (if camping in your own tent — alternatively the Tsaatan host you in their canvas ört), headlamp + spare batteries, water purification tablets, personal toiletries (no facilities at camps). Bring small gifts for host family (NOT money) — practical items like batteries, fishing hooks, sewing supplies, or kids’ books are appreciated.

Can I ride the reindeer?

Yes — reindeer riding is part of the Tsaatan cultural experience and we arrange short rides during your stay. Reindeer are smaller than horses and the gait is unique (a fast-trotting bounce). Riding is safe for adults up to 90 kg / 200 lbs. The Tsaatan use reindeer primarily for transporting belongings between camps and for milk; herd-following is done on foot or by horseback. Long-distance reindeer riding is not recommended — short cultural rides only, with the host family’s guidance.

How much does the 11-day Tsaatan Tour cost?

Our 11-day Northern Mongolia / Tsaatan Reindeer People tour starts from $1,550 per person for groups of 4+ travelers. Private bookings: $2,200 for 2 travelers, $2,800 solo. Deposit: $500 per person, balance due 60 days before departure. Price includes Ulaanbaatar to Murun roundtrip flight, ground transport (4×4 + horse hire), English-speaking local Tsaatan-knowledgeable guide, all meals, 10 nights accommodation (hotel + ger camp + Tsaatan ört homestay), Khuvsgul National Park permits, and direct compensation to host families. International flights, insurance, and personal gear extra.
