    DAY 1: Welcome to Bayan-Ulgii provinceDay 1

DAY 1: Welcome to Bayan-Ulgii province

Bayan-Ulgii is the westernmost corner of Mongolia. It is famous for the magnificent Altai Mountains. The majority population is Kazakhs, who are well known as the last nomadic eagle hunters. Our team will meet you upon arrival at your local airport in Olgii. Everything is settled, and we are ready for the expedition.  Drive to Sagsai where you meet our nomadic family in their winter home. Kazakhs in this region are very hospitable, and please feel free to photograph and film. For dinner, a special dish for you, please enjoy the traditional Bes Barmak. Stay overnight in a nomad’s house.

  2. DAY2
DAY 2: Prepare for migrationDay 2

    DAY 2: Prepare for migration

Today, you can see how the family is preparing for migration. Vehicles will be thoroughly checked. They will take only the essentials and try to pack as little as possible. The horses will be shod and prepared for a long migration. We would also be very grateful if you could help the family a little. There is a long journey ahead, and they need to be properly prepared for it. Usually, wives and small children go ahead by car and do not follow the migration as it is too difficult. If the children in the family are old enough to help herd the animals, they stay with the father and help with migration.

  3. DAY3-7
DAY 3-7: Migration and trekkingDay 3-7

    DAY 3-7: Migration and trekking

Here we go! Every day starts early at 6-7 am. We’re heading into the wilderness, so phone reception will be very poor. The first day is usually the easiest due to the lower altitude. Every day we rise higher, and there is more and more snow. Enjoy being part of an amazing migration. We have a generator with us, so don’t worry about charging your cameras and phone.

You will be accompanied by a guide, and each participant will have a walkie-talkie in case of emergency.

Halfway through we will take a break for lunch.

If the weather allows us to migrate as planned, it can be done in 4 days. But sometimes, when it’s cold and stormy, you need an extra day. During the migration, you will see many other nomads migrating in the same direction. So there might be a couple thousand animals in the valley.

Having reached our final destination, stay overnight in the spring wooden house of the Nomad. The next morning, you can help the animals move to a new place that they are very happy about. Thank you for being part of this amazing migration.

    Enjoy your migration!

  4. DAY8
DAY 8: Visit the family of a nomadic eagle hunterDay 8

DAY 8: Visit the family of a nomadic eagle hunter

Say goodbye to the family! Today you have the opportunity to visit a family of nomadic eagle hunters. Our province hosts the annual Golden Eagle Festival, where more than a hundred eagle hunters compete and celebrate the opening of the hunting season. Eagle hunting has a thousand-year history and has been passed down from generation to generation. The Kazakhs of the Bayan-Ulgii province have still preserved such ancient traditional hunting, and we will be happy to take you to the eagle hunter’s family.

  5. DAY9
DAY 9: Real eagle huntingDay 9

    DAY 9: Real eagle hunting

After breakfast, we will go on a real eagle hunt. Take a horseback ride up the mountainside. Enjoy the surrounding nature! An eagle hunter will demonstrate how he trains his eagle. Please feel free to take a memorable photo with the golden eagle.

In the evening, we return to Olgii. Stay overnight at a local hotel. Farewell dinner at the restaurant!

  6. DAY10

    DAY 10. Return to Ulaanbaatar

End of the journey! Thank you for coming!

And of course, the leader of the group is the guide, so follow his/her commands.

We bring a generator with us, and every day in the evening you can charge your phones and cameras.

During the trip, the telephone connection is partially operational, but usually, the connection is very poor.

First of all, you will need warm clothes. It will be very cold, so take extra warm jackets with you. And please bring good hiking boots. Most of the trails are steep and rocky and you will need warm and waterproof shoes.

  • Warm clothes – Hat, Gloves, Jacket, Pants,
  • Footwear – Hiking boots, Socks, Sandals,
  • Clothes – Mid-layers, Base layers, Light clothes,
  • Rain jacket,
  • Thermos,

Unfortunately, there are no showers or toilets during the trip. We constantly move and change locations so that it is going to be a natural toilet, just like the locals do. I’m sorry about that. But if you really want to have a toilet tent and shower every couple of days. We try to arrange this for an additional fee. This time of year is cold and windy, so be prepared for the worst.

FAQ

When does the Mongolian nomad migration happen?

Mongolian nomadic herder families migrate twice a year: in late spring (mid-May to mid-June) when they move livestock from winter to summer pastures, and again in autumn (late August to mid-September) returning to winter camps. Our 11-day Mongolian Nomad Migration Tour runs in early-to-mid June to coincide with the spring migration — when families pack up their gers, herd livestock across mountain passes, and reset camp at high summer pastures.

What does the Mongolian Nomad Migration Tour include?

Our 11-day tour follows a real Kazakh or Tuvan herder family during their spring migration in western or northern Mongolia. You travel with the family by horse, camel, or 4×4 (depending on terrain), help pack the ger and load camels, herd sheep and yaks across passes, share traditional meals, and stay in the family ger at each new camp location. Includes domestic flights, English-speaking local guide, all meals, accommodation (homestay nights + ger camp + Ulaanbaatar hotel), and cultural permits.

Is it ethical to participate in a nomadic migration?

Yes — when done with respect and proper preparation. We work only with families who have INVITED us into their migration as compensated cultural ambassadors. We never disrupt traditional practices for tourist photos, never force interaction with children, and always defer to the family’s pace and decisions. The fee paid to each host family supports their livelihood directly. Group size is capped at 4-6 travelers per departure to prevent overwhelming the family.

How is this tour different from a regular Mongolian homestay?

A standard homestay is static — you stay 1-3 nights at one family’s camp. The Migration Tour is dynamic — you LIVE the migration: pack up, move the herd over multiple days, set up new camp, repeat. You experience the full annual rhythm of nomadic life rather than a snapshot. It’s physically more demanding (4-6 hours of horse riding or walking per day) but culturally far deeper. Best for travelers who want adventure plus immersion, not just observation.

How fit do I need to be for the Migration Tour?

Moderate fitness. You need comfort with 4-6 hours per day of horse riding (we provide gentle horses and instruction for beginners), some walking on uneven terrain, and physical work helping load camels and herd livestock. Altitude is generally below 2,500m so altitude sickness is rare. If you can complete a full-day hike or 6-hour horse ride at home without exhaustion, you are ready. Minimum age 14, no upper age limit with doctor clearance.

What should I bring for a Mongolian migration tour?

Layered clothing for variable weather: thermal base layers, fleece, windproof shell, insulated jacket (nights at 2,000m can drop below 5°C even in June). Sturdy waterproof boots (you will be in horses, mud, river crossings). Wide-brimmed sun hat + warm hat. SPF50 sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm. Personal toiletries + headlamp + power bank (no electricity for days). We provide camping gear, sleeping bags, and a horse for personal use. Full packing list emailed 30 days before departure.

How much does the Mongolian Nomad Migration Tour cost?

Our 11-day Mongolian Nomad Migration Tour starts from $1,200 per person for groups of 4+ travelers. Private bookings: $1,800 for 2 travelers, $2,400 solo. Deposit: $500 per person, balance due 60 days before departure. Price includes domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar, all meals, English-speaking local guide, accommodation across multiple homestay families, ground transport, horse use, and cultural fees paid to host families. International flights to Mongolia ($800-$2,200), travel insurance, and personal gear are extra.

When can I book the Mongolian Nomad Migration Tour?

Spring 2026 departures are available: early June (June 5-15) and mid-June (June 14-24). Both align with the seasonal nomadic migration. Group size is capped at 6 travelers per departure to maintain the intimate cultural experience and prevent overwhelming host families. Book 4-6 months in advance — these dates fill by late March because the migration window is short and group size limited. Private departures on adjacent dates available for 2+ travelers.
