Tour Info
What to expect from the Golden Eagle festival?
At the Golden Eagle Festival, Eagle Hunters will be exhibiting the traditional Kazakh arts of eagle hunting and participating in a number of traditional nomadic horse games, camel races, and archery competitions.
The Eagle Hunters show off their traditional Kazakh clothes called “shapans“, which display a number of beautiful Kazakh designs and styles. The games being played are called “Kokpar“, where two men on horseback wrestle over the skin of a goat, racing through the steppe. “Tyin ilu“, or coin taking, is where the participants race through the steppe, picking up coins along their path.
Specially trained golden eagles will be competing in the two-day festival. For the first day, the eagle will fly from the hillside and land on its master’s arm. On the second day, the eagle will descend and grab hold of a fox skin being held by the professional golden eagle hunter.
For the competition, awards and prizes are given to those eagle hunters and their magnificent golden eagles based on speed and skill. Come and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Discover Altai Team!
Hunting with eagle
The art of eagle hunting has been practiced for centuries in Eurasia. It is traditionally passed down from father to son, and today it can be visited in the remote corners of the Altai Mountains.
The Bayan-Ulgii province of Mongolia is the westernmost part of the country, where nomadic Kazakhs are famous for their hospitality and traditional hunting with the golden eagles. There are currently over 250 eagle hunters. The biggest golden eagle festival takes place in this province every first weekend of October.
Nomadic Kazakhs treat the eagle like a member of the family and they believe that when you have an eagle, evil will stay away from the family. The boys learn to hunt with eagles at the age of 10-13 and in the beginning, they will watch how their father or uncle trains his eagles.
The best time to visit an eagle hunter’s family
The best time to visit an eagle hunter’s family is from mid-September to March. Discover Altai team offers you a variety of eagle hunting tours in western Mongolia. Hunting with an eagle is an honor for men and a majestic connection between birds and people. It used to be a way to get meat and skin, but nowadays it’s more of a traditional sport.
The eagle hunters capture the eagle from their nest which is located on a high and steep rock. On average, eagles live 30 to 40 years. Hunters release their eagles after 5-8 years. It’s always an emotional moment when the eagle hunter releases his eagle. Therefore, for this, they choose a new and distant place to set themselves free in the wild.
Eagle hunters only use female eagles because they are much larger and more aggressive. Their main prey is mammals such as foxes, hares, and marmots. The wingspan of the eagle reaches two meters, and the weight is about 6 kilograms. It is not easy to train an eagle, in the summer it needs to be fed daily, and they really eat a lot. This helps them change their feathers yearly and get ready for hunting season in mid-September.
In western Mongolia, you can also meet falconers who hunt with their specially trained falcons. Falcons are faster and are the best option when you are going to hunt small animals like hares.
Golden Eagle Festival
More than a hundred eagle hunters compete in the annual competition of Golden Eagle Festival and demonstrate their hunting skills. The competition consists of two stages, in which the eagle hunters call the eagle from the hillside. Prizes will be awarded based on several factors such as flight speed, prey detection accuracy, dive technique, and destination.
How to become an eagle hunter?
First of all, you need passion and learn more about magical creatures like the golden eagle. It is also important to be a shepherd who lives in a large area and will hunt with his eagle in the mountains on horseback. But you always can visit western Mongolia and our Discover Altai team will guide you to the remotely located eagle hunter’s family where you can be a part of real eagle hunting.
This is a package tour with a local support team. Also, the tour itinerary includes trekking on horses and visiting a nomadic eagle hunter’s family. Come and Enjoy the gorgeous Mongolian Altai!

FAQ
When is the 2026 Golden Eagle Festival in Mongolia?
The 2026 Golden Eagle Festival takes place September 30 and October 1, 2026 at Sayat Tolgoi just outside Ölgii city in Bayan-Ölgii Province, western Mongolia. Our 8-day photography tour runs Sept 27 – Oct 4, 2026 to cover the pre-festival arrival, both festival days, and post-festival Altai exploration. This festival is held two weeks after the smaller Sagsai Festival (Sept 17-18) and is the largest eagle hunting festival in the world, with 150+ eagle hunters and 1,500-2,000 visitors.
What makes this a Photography Tour vs a regular festival tour?
Our Photography Tour is designed specifically for photographers: we arrive at the festival grounds 2 hours before the crowds each morning for exclusive access during golden-hour light, we pre-arrange 1-on-1 portrait sessions with 3-5 individual eagle hunters and their birds, and our group is capped at 8 photographers to keep movement quiet and non-disruptive. We include one homestay night with a Kazakh eagle hunter family for controlled-setting portrait work. Regular tour operators run groups of 20+ with no special photography access. Both amateurs and professionals welcome.
What camera gear should I bring to the Golden Eagle Festival?
Recommended kit: a DSLR or mirrorless body with a 70-200mm telephoto for festival action and portraits, a wide-angle 16-35mm for landscapes and environmental shots, extra batteries (cold drains them fast), and multiple high-capacity memory cards (32GB+). A monopod is more practical than a tripod in festival crowds. Bring a weather-sealed bag for dust. Professional-grade lens rental from Ulaanbaatar is available on request (Canon L-series, Sony G-master, Nikon pro). A polarizing filter helps in strong autumn light.
How do I get to the Golden Eagle Festival from the USA, Europe, or Asia?
Most international travelers fly to Ulaanbaatar (UBN) via Seoul, Beijing, Istanbul, or Moscow. From USA: JFK/LAX/SFO to Seoul (Korean Air) then to Ulaanbaatar, 15-20 hours total, roundtrip $1,400-$2,200. From Europe: Frankfurt/London to Ulaanbaatar via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) or Moscow, 12-16 hours total, roundtrip €1,000-€1,800. From Asia: direct flights from Seoul, Tokyo, or Beijing 3-5 hours, $400-$900. From Ulaanbaatar we include a domestic flight to Ölgii on day 1 of the tour. US and EU passport holders get 30 days visa-free.
What’s included in the $2,300 tour price?
Included: domestic flights (Ulaanbaatar-Ölgii roundtrip), 7 nights accommodation (hotels in Ulaanbaatar + Ölgii, Kazakh homestay night, ger camp nights), all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), English-speaking local Kazakh photography guide, 4×4 Land Cruiser transport, festival entrance passes for both days, pre-arranged private portrait sessions with eagle hunters, park/permit fees, and airport transfers. NOT included: international flights to Mongolia, travel insurance (required; ~$80-$200), personal camera gear, single-room supplement ($350), tips for guide and drivers ($10-$15 per day per traveler), and alcohol.
Where do we stay during the Golden Eagle Festival tour?
Your 7 nights are split between 4 accommodation types: (1) 1 night in a central Ulaanbaatar hotel on arrival (private room, hot shower, WiFi); (2) 2 nights in Ölgii guesthouse (private room, hot shower); (3) 2 nights at a festival-side ger camp (traditional Kazakh felt tent, wood stove, shared bathrooms); (4) 1 homestay night with a working Kazakh eagle hunter family (shared sleeping area in their family ger, cultural immersion); (5) 1 night at a traditional nomadic camp in the Altai. All beds have yak-wool blankets; gers are heated with wood stoves.
How cold is it at the Golden Eagle Festival in early October?
Early October daytime temperatures in Bayan-Ölgii typically range from 5°C to 15°C (41-59°F). Nights drop to −5°C (23°F) at the festival ground. High altitude and clear skies mean strong UV during the day. Pack thermal base layers, a warm windproof jacket, insulated boots, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and SPF50 sunscreen. Gers where you sleep are heated with wood stoves (15-22°C inside). Occasional early snow showers are possible but rare. A full packing list with brand recommendations is emailed 45 days before departure.
How far in advance should I book the 2026 Golden Eagle Festival tour?
Book 6-9 months in advance for the 2026 Golden Eagle Festival (September 30 – October 1). Group size is strictly limited to 8 photographers per departure and this tour typically sells out by late May. International flights to Ulaanbaatar are also dramatically cheaper when booked 6+ months ahead. A $600 deposit secures your spot; the balance is due 60 days before departure. We accept bank transfer, Wise, and credit card. Late bookings (within 30 days of departure) are accepted only if seats remain — usually not the case for the Golden Eagle Festival.
