OVERVIEW

Mongolian Nomadic Life Tour: Migrate with nomads in the Altai Mountains

Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world. It is the 18th largest country by area, with only 3.4 million people. And if we consider that half of them live in the capital Ulaanbaatar, then it turns out only 1.7 million people for the rest of the vast land.

How is this possible?

  • Well, the main reason is that the Mongols are descendants of the great Genghis Khan. And the Great Mongol Empire conquered the largest territory in human history. But it is one thing to conquer, but how could they hold such a large land to this day? The best answer is a nomadic lifestyle. Even today, when we talk about Mongolia, it is automatically associated with vast lands of nomads.

At present, there are more than 80 million animals in Mongolia, such as sheep, goats, horses, cows, camels, and yaks, which nomads herd in their daily lives. And this is the only country where there are more horses than people.

Of course, having so many animals is not easy, and it requires hard work all year round with no rest. Additionally, the most important part for nomads is to migrate 4–5 times a year to graze animals on the best pastures.

The Discover Altai team invites you to join our Mongolian Nomadic Life Tour, a unique opportunity to travel alongside real herders and witness their traditional lifestyle. During this authentic experience, you will explore the beauty of the Altai Mountains and discover the rhythm of Mongolia’s nomadic culture.

Western Mongolia is well known as the home of nomadic eagle hunters as well as the magnificent Altai Mountains. On the Mongolian Nomadic Life Tour, you will have the chance to take part in a real nomadic migration and enjoy the warm hospitality of Kazakh eagle hunters.

Everything You Need To Know

Tour information

Depending on land differences, nomads migrate on average 4 times a year. So, nomads have two big breaks: three months of summer from June to September and 4 months of winter from November to February.

During this period of the year, nomads are more likely to stay and not migrate. But in the remaining months, you can see migrations throughout the country.

Someone migrates along a short route of about 10 km, and someone migrates along a longer route, and this takes more than 4-5 days. If you want to join the nomad migration and are looking for picturesque landscapes, we can offer you to join the spring migration in the Altai Mountains.

The average destination is about 140 km and it takes about 5 days. During this migration, you can experience the harsh weather of the Altai Mountains and the hardships that can come with such a long migration.

But you can also join the migration in June, August, and September. During this time of the year, the weather is warmer and you can enjoy horseback riding with nomadic families.

If you are interested in joining the nomad migration, please do not hesitate to contact us. As a local expert, we will do our best to create the perfect nomad migration trip for you.

Nomads migrate 3-7 times a year depending on what land they graze their animals on.

It could be the endless Mongolian steppe, the Gobi desert, forested northern Mongolia, and more mountainous western Mongolia. The main reason for migration is to herd the animal to a fresh pasture.

Thus, there are always places like winter pastures and summer pastures that cannot be mixed and must follow local laws. And the number of your animals can be a factor in your migration.

If you have more than a thousand animals, this means that you cannot stay in one place for more than 2 months. Because your animals will finish eating grass in this place and you need to migrate to a new place to herd your animals.

And for wintering, nomads try to stay in warmer and less windy places, for example, in valleys or on the north face of the mountains. In summer, they can take higher altitudes, where there is more greenery and not so hot, which is good for animals.

If you are interested in nomadic traditions and want to experience the real nomadic lifestyle, you experience a unique expedition by joining the nomad migration.

Also, if you are a photographer or filmmaker, you can take amazing wildlife shots, which are very natural.

The nomads are very friendly and have traditions that have been preserved for thousands of years. They always respect visitors and are glad to see you.

During the migration trip, you will be supported by the local experienced team. The only trusted off-road vehicles and chef cooks.

The most important part of the trip is to join the right family. Not all of them are happy to have extra attention and be filmed during not-that-easy migration.

When they are very tired and don’t really want to communicate. So, we will only work with the family who are more than happy to have tourists and who have sons, who really matter.

When there are a couple of sons and they can handle all the hard work of the migration and they don’t worry about anything and enjoy it.

And of course, we will also be very helpful to the migrating family.  So, yeah it is important to join the right family.

Migration Trip has a large number of hidden gems that can be very interesting. And, of course, this is a unique expedition that you will remember for long years.

There are many traditions that have a deep meaning and are an important part of a nomad’s life.

They live all year round in the wilderness, and everything they do is very different from the Western world. As additional activities, you can ride horses and go on real eagle hunting.

Visit more families and get to know their culture. Visit a local museum in the town and enjoy their traditional meals.
