OVERVIEW

Mongolia — a land of endless horizons, rolling steppes, and a timeless nomadic spirit. Once the heart of the Great Mongol Empire led by Genghis Khan, this vast and wild country remains one of the world’s least populated destinations, where nature still reigns supreme.

Join our The Discover Altai Team for an unforgettable trekking and climbing expedition in the breathtaking Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. Venture through pristine valleys, glacial rivers, and snow-capped peaks — all while your gear is comfortably transported by camels. Each day, you’ll hike 14–18 kilometers through stunning landscapes and set up camp in a new, awe-inspiring location under the stars.

Experience the true spirit of adventure. Discover Mongolia with us — where every step is a journey into the wild.

The expedition includes visits to the main attractions of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, cultural encounters with local nomadic families, Eagle Hunters, and an ascent of Mongolia’s highest peak — Mount Khuiten (4,374 m).

This exclusive adventure is available only twice a year, as the mountain valleys are narrow and the trails open briefly in July before becoming snow-covered again by September.

It’s truly one of the greatest expeditions Mongolia has to offer — a rare journey through untouched wilderness and ancient culture.

Our support team consists entirely of local experts, highly experienced in mountain travel and logistics. Discover Altai is fully equipped with quality camping gear, including durable tents, comfortable mattresses, and a complete field kitchen to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the remote Altai Mountains.

Day 1: Arrive in OlgiiDay 1

    Day 1: Arrive in Olgii

Welcome to the heart of the Altai Mountains!
Our team will warmly welcome you at the local Ölgii Airport. Bayan-Ölgii Province, located at the westernmost edge of Mongolia, is home to the famous nomadic eagle hunters who have preserved their ancient traditions for thousands of years.

Meet your local support team — experienced tour guides, skilled drivers, and a dedicated expedition chef. Then we’re off to explore the breathtaking Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.
Enjoy a memorable camping experience by the beautiful shores of Khoton Lake.

  2. DAY2
Day 2: Baga Turgen Waterfall ValleyDay 2

Day 2: Baga Turgen Waterfall Valley

Enjoy the beautiful Baga Turgen Waterfall Valley, one of the most popular attractions among Mongolians, often called the “Mongolian Switzerland.”
Here you can admire the stunning snow-capped mountains and picturesque scenery before returning to camp.
Later, visit and meet local nomadic families to experience their traditional lifestyle.

  3. DAY3
    Day 3: Aral TolgoiDay 3

    Day 3: Aral Tolgoi

Begin your trek along the scenic Khoton Lake, surrounded by majestic mountains and peaceful valleys.
We reach Aral Tolgoi, where a local guardian post stands. This area serves as the summer pastureland for nomadic herders, and along the way, you’ll encounter traditional yurts and herds grazing freely across the plains.

  4. DAY4
    Day 4: Bear ValleyDay 4

    Day 4: Bear Valley

Explore one of the most beautiful and untouched valleys in the national park — Bear Valley.
No vehicles can reach this remote area, so camels will carry our baggage as we hike in.
Enjoy the enchanting Heart Lake, named for its heart-like shape, and take in the spectacular mountain scenery that surrounds the valley.

  5. DAY5
Day 5: Khar Salaa (Black River Valley)Day 5

Day 5: Khar Salaa (Black River Valley)

Today’s route takes us through the challenging Takhilt Pass, a steep and dramatic mountain pass also known as the “Death Pass.”
During the migration season, icy and slippery trails can make this route dangerous for animals, which is why our tours here are operated only in July and August, when the conditions are safe.
Marvel at the vast views and experience the raw beauty of the Black River Valley.

  6. DAY6
Day 6: Tsagaan Gol (White River Valley)Day 6

Day 6: Tsagaan Gol (White River Valley)

Continue your adventure to Tsagaan Gol, or White River Valley.
The river’s milky-white color comes from glacial mineral dust, which gives it its unique appearance but makes it undrinkable.
Enjoy panoramic views of the snow-covered peaks and glaciers surrounding this dramatic valley.

  7. DAY7
Day 7: Trek to Base CampDay 7

Day 7: Trek to Base Camp

FAQ

When are the 14-day Trekking & Climbing 2026 departures?

Scheduled departures run in the July–August window when the Altai high passes are snow-free, river crossings are safe, and weather is most stable for both trekking and the Mt Khuiten summit attempt. Group size is capped at 12 participants per departure. Custom private departures on adjacent dates are available for 4+ travelers with custom pricing. Specific 2026 dates are confirmed at booking — typically two scheduled departures, mid-July and early August.

How is this 14-day combo tour different from the 10-day Khuiten Climb and the 11-day Trekking Tour?

We offer three distinct Altai expeditions: the 10-day Mt Khuiten Climb ($2,400) is a focused summit attempt for climbers; the 11-day Altai Trekking Tour ($2,000) is a pure trek across Tavan Bogd with no summit; this 14-day Trekking & Climbing Combo ($3,600) does both — extended trek across the national park PLUS the Mt Khuiten summit attempt PLUS additional cultural visits to nomadic Kazakh families. It’s the most comprehensive Altai option and the best fit for travelers who have flown a long distance and want the complete experience.

How much does the 14-day Trekking & Climbing tour cost?

The 14-day Trekking & Climbing combo is priced from $3,600 per person. Deposit: $1,000 per person, balance due 60 days before departure. Cancellation: $400 fee 60+ days before, $500 if 45+ days, $600 if less than a month. Price includes domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii roundtrip, all ground transport, English-speaking lead guide, certified mountain guide for the Khuiten summit attempt, expedition cook, all meals, accommodation (mix of tent + Kazakh family yurt + Ulaanbaatar hotel), pack-camel/horse support, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park permits.

Do I need previous mountaineering experience?

The Mt Khuiten summit attempt is a technical mountaineering objective requiring crampons, ice axe, and rope work on the upper slopes (4,000m+). Previous experience on a similar peak (Stok Kangri, Mt Kazbek, Pico de Orizaba, or any 4,000–5,000m alpine objective) is strongly recommended. If you have no prior mountaineering experience but solid trekking fitness, the trekking portion of this tour is still rewarding — your guide may suggest skipping the summit day if conditions or skill don’t align. Our certified IFMGA-trained mountain guide makes the final call.

What altitudes will the tour reach?

The trekking portion reaches altitudes of 2,300m–3,500m across passes and valley floors. The Mt Khuiten summit attempt reaches the peak at 4,374m / 14,346 ft — Mongolia’s highest point on the borders of China and Russia. Three nights of camping above 3,000m are scheduled for acclimatization before the summit push. Travelers with no prior experience above 3,000m should consult us before booking. Mild altitude sickness (headache, fatigue) is common and resolves with rest; severe altitude sickness is rare on this route given the gradual acclimatization profile.

What’s included and excluded in the tour price?

Included: domestic flights Ulaanbaatar ↔ Ölgii, all ground transport in 4×4 vehicles, English-speaking lead guide, certified mountain guide for summit, expedition cook, all meals, 13 nights accommodation (mix of camping + Kazakh yurt homestay + 2 nights Ulaanbaatar hotel), pack-camel/horse support, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park permits, group equipment (tents, sleeping mats, mess tent, cooking gear). Excluded: international flights to Mongolia ($800–$2,200), travel and mountaineering insurance, personal climbing gear (rented separately or self-supplied), alcohol, optional tips for guide and crew.

How fit do I need to be?

Solid mountain fitness is essential. You should be comfortable with 6–8 hours of trekking per day on uneven terrain at altitudes up to 3,500m, carrying a light daypack (5–8 kg). On summit day you may walk 8–12 hours including pre-dawn start. Recommended training: 4–6 months of regular hiking (weekly 15–20 km hikes with elevation gain), 2–3 cardio sessions per week, and ideally 2+ trips above 3,000m before this expedition. Suitable age range: 15–65 with doctor clearance and recent altitude experience.

What gear do I need to bring?

Trekking kit: broken-in B1 hiking boots, gaiters, 30L daypack, 4-season sleeping bag rated to −10°C, insulated down jacket, waterproof shell jacket + pants, thermal base layers, trekking poles. Climbing kit (for summit day): mountaineering boots (B2 or B3), crampons compatible with the boots, ice axe, climbing harness, helmet — all rentable in Ulaanbaatar with advance notice. Personal: SPF50 sunscreen, glacier sunglasses (Cat 4), headlamp + spare batteries, lip balm, water bottle/bladder. We provide tents, sleeping mats, mess tent, cooking gear, group ropes. Full packing list emailed 45 days before departure.
