Frequently Asked Questions

It’s no secret that Mongols are considered some of the best horsemen in existence. With a rich history steeped in equestrianism, it’s not surprising that children growing up in Mongolian countryside learn to ride and race horses from a young age.

A horse related to a champion, either through father or mother, costs between 35.000$ and 70.000$, even if the offspring has not won any races yet. On the other hand, Naadam champions cost 7,000$-14,000$, while regular horses used for transport and work typically cost around 530$.

If you’re planning on making the journey across Mongolia on horseback, it’s important to factor in some additional time for rest and recovery. Most people take about three weeks to complete the ride, though some have been known to do it in as little as two.

There are a few things that make Mongolian horses unique. For one, they are incredibly tough and resilient, able to withstand harsh conditions that would kill other horses. They are also smaller than most breeds, which makes them more agile and easier to handle. Finally, they are known for their speed and endurance, which makes them ideal for long-distance travel.

The Mongolian horse is our national pride, so we believe that we are connected by soul. Horses are our piece of heart, and Mongolian horses have helped to confirm the globe in history.

Mongolian horses are small but very strong. They are comfortable to ride even for beginners. The average height is about 14 hands, and the weight is around 450-500 kg. The color of our Mongolian horse is black, brown, and chestnut. And some of them have a beautiful white star on their forehead.

In Mongolia, horses and families have a deep connection and, children as young as three or four years old start to learn how to ride. The true Mongolian Nomadic lifestyle is hard without horses.

In the Mongolia horse riding tours, you can understand how Mongolian horse is important for us. So welcome to our Horseback Tour and let’s get discover more deeply. We are looking forward to seeing you in Mongolia!

Mongolians have been riding horses for thousands of years, ever since we first started living in this land. Horses have always played an important role in our nomadic lifestyle, helping us to travel long distances across the steppe and carrying our belongings with us.

Nowadays, horses are still used for transportation in some parts of Mongolia, but they are also used for leisure and sport. Mongolians love horseback riding, and it is not uncommon to see people riding their horses through the city streets or out in the countryside.

Horseback riding is a great way to explore Mongolian beautiful nature, and it is also a lot of fun! If you are planning a trip to Mongolia, we highly recommend that you try a horseback riding tour at least once. It is an experience you will never forget!

A walking distance of 35 to 40 miles is a good starting point. A trail runner in excellent shape might journey 55 – 90 miles each day, while the greatest endurance racer could travel 100 miles (161) per day if they were in ideal circumstances.

FAQ

When are the Mongolia Horse Trekking Tour 2026 departures?

Two scheduled group departures run in 2026: June 14–22 and August 8–17. Both align with the mid-June to late-August window when Altai mountain valleys are accessible (snow-free passes, dry trails, green pastures). Outside this window the high-altitude routes either still hold snow (early June) or experience late-summer rain (September onwards). Group size is capped at 8 riders per departure. Private departures on adjacent dates available for 2+ travellers with custom pricing.

How much does the Mongolia Horse Trekking Tour cost?

Per-person pricing scales with group size: 2 PAX $2,800 each, 3 PAX $2,400 each, 4+ PAX $2,200 each (joining a scheduled departure). Maximum group size 8 riders. Deposit: $600 per person, balance due 60 days before departure. Cancellation: $400 fee 60+ days before, $500 if 45+ days, $600 if less than a month. Price includes all ground transport from Ölgii, English-speaking lead guide, local Kazakh horse herder support, expedition cook, all meals, accommodation, horse hire, Altai Tavan Bogd permits.

Do I need horse riding experience to join?

Some horse riding experience is strongly recommended but not strictly required. The Mongolia horse trekking tour involves 4–6 hours of riding per day on uneven mountain terrain, river crossings, and steady ascents/descents. Complete beginners typically struggle with saddle fatigue and balance on day 3–4. We recommend a minimum of 5–10 hours of riding practice in the 6 months before the trip. Our local Kazakh horse herders provide instruction at the start and ride alongside throughout — they are exceptional teachers for nervous riders.

What kind of horses do you use?

We ride Mongolian horses — small-framed (typically 12–14 hands), incredibly hardy, and bred for centuries on the steppe. They are far calmer and surer-footed in rough terrain than most Western breeds, with two natural advantages: a smooth amble (jorlogh) gait that reduces saddle fatigue on long days, and natural stamina at altitude. Each rider is matched to a horse based on their experience and physical size. Local Kazakh herders accompany the group on their own horses — typically more than one herder per 3 riders — for safety and care.

Where in Mongolia does the horse trekking tour take place?

The expedition is based in Bayan-Ölgii Province in far western Mongolia — the Altai Mountains and the buffer zones of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. The route covers high alpine valleys (2,200m–2,800m), glacial rivers, alpine meadows, and Kazakh nomadic herder pastures. Wildlife along the route includes red deer, foxes, marmots, ibex, and (rarely) wolves. The trek begins and ends in Ölgii city, accessed by domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar.

How fit do I need to be for the horse trekking tour?

Moderate fitness is sufficient. You should be comfortable with 4–6 hours per day of riding, occasional walking on uneven terrain, and basic camp life. The biggest physical challenge is saddle fatigue — your inner thighs and lower back will be sore on day 3–4 if you haven’t ridden recently. We recommend 8 weeks of preparation including regular cardio (cycling/walking) and 5–10 short riding sessions before the trip. Suitable age range: 15–60 (older riders welcome with doctor clearance and recent riding experience).

What’s included in the tour price?

Included: ground transport from Ölgii to trailhead and return, English-speaking lead guide, 2+ local Kazakh horse herders accompanying the group, expedition cook, all meals, 9 nights accommodation (mix of tent + Kazakh family yurt + 2 nights hotel in Ulaanbaatar), horse hire for full trek, pack-horse / camel for camping equipment, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park permits, group equipment (tents, sleeping mats, mess tent). Excluded: international flights to Mongolia, domestic flight Ulaanbaatar ↔ Ölgii, alcohol, travel insurance, personal riding gear, optional tips for guide and herders.

What should I bring for the Mongolia horse trekking tour?

Riding kit: jodhpur boots or sturdy ankle boots with a 1–1.5cm heel (essential — flat shoes slip through stirrups), padded riding tights or jodhpurs, riding helmet (we provide if needed), gloves. Outdoor kit: waterproof shell jacket + pants, fleece, thermal base layers (Altai nights drop to 5°C even in July), wide-brimmed sun hat, warm hat, SPF50 sunscreen, sunglasses, headlamp, soft duffel bag (no rigid suitcases — they don’t fit on pack horses). We provide tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags rated to 0°C, and a horse for personal use. Full packing list emailed 30 days before departure.
